Current scientific evidence: why intervening in the vestibular system really matters

For years, the vestibular system has been one of the great overlooked areas in pediatrics.

Either it has been overly simplified, or it has been addressed without a clear clinical framework.

Today, the evidence is unequivocal: the vestibular system is an organizing system of neurodevelopment.

What does current research tell us?

  • Early vestibular development influences the organization of postural and visual control
  • There is a relationship between vestibular function, sustained attention, and self-regulation
  • Vestibular alterations are associated with motor, attentional, and participation difficulties
  • Well-dosed vestibular intervention improves stability, functionality, and postural safety

In the pediatric population with neurodevelopmental difficulties (including ADHD), multiple studies have identified alterations in vestibular processing that impact attention, motor control, and regulation of the level of alertness.

But the evidence is also very clear about one fundamental point:

not every vestibular stimulus is therapeutic.

Effectiveness depends on:

  • the pathway being stimulated
  • intensity and duration
  • developmental timing
  • integration with other sensory systems

Key point:

It is not about doing more.

It is about doing it with clinical judgment.

The vestibular system is not addressed through closed protocols, but through clinical reasoning, observation, and an understanding of development.
