In clinical practice, there are children who create a particular feeling: “something doesn’t quite fit.”
They move, play, and even meet certain milestones, but they show subtle difficulties:
◾ they trip frequently
◾ they avoid certain positions
◾ they seem unstable or disorganized
◾ they struggle to self-regulate
Often, these cases generate frustration, because the classic approach is not enough to explain — or to resolve — what is happening.
This is where the so-called “invisible systems” come into play.
One of the most relevant is the vestibular system, responsible for processing information related to balance, movement, and orientation in space. Its influence is profound: it participates in postural organization, coordination, visual stability, and even the regulation of the nervous system.
When this system does not function in an integrated way, the child may:
◾ move a lot, but without organization
◾ avoid movements that challenge their balance
◾ show clumsiness or insecurity
◾ have difficulties with motor planning
And most importantly: these signs are not always evident at first glance.
This explains why, in many cases, increasing the amount of exercise or repeating motor stimuli does not generate significant changes.
The problem is not a lack of activity, but a lack of organization.
Motor development does not depend only on “doing more,” but on how the nervous system processes, integrates, and uses information.
In addition, the vestibular system does not act in isolation. It is in constant interaction with other sensory systems — proprioception, vision — with the body’s structure, and with the child’s experience. It is, in essence, a node within a complex network.
Understanding this changes the intervention.
It is no longer about proposing more exercises, but about designing experiences that allow the system to organize itself progressively and meaningfully.
It is about observing with greater precision, identifying what is interfering, and accompanying that process of integration.
Because, ultimately:
the problem is not how much the child moves, but how that movement is organized.
