In pediatric physiotherapy, we often arrive at the consultation looking for concrete answers: a motor difficulty, a developmental delay, a postural alteration, or a specific symptom that concerns the family. However, when we observe the child from a global perspective, data often emerge that had not been considered and that can completely change clinical reasoning.
Assessment is not just a collection of tests or scales. It is a process of observation, listening, and integration. It is the possibility of understanding how that child organizes their movement, how they interact with their environment, how they regulate their body, and how they respond to the functional demands of everyday life.
Sometimes, behind an apparently isolated motor difficulty, we find sensory alterations, problems in postural organization, respiratory difficulties, restrictions in participation, or even compensation strategies that have been sustained for years. Other times, we discover important strengths that allow therapeutic goals to be reconsidered in a more functional and realistic way.
Global assessment also allows us to stop looking only at “what is missing” and begin to understand “how that child functions.” And that change in focus transforms clinical decisions.
When clinical reasoning is supported by broad and integrated observation:
- interventions gain coherence,
- therapeutic goals become more functional,
- and families better understand the purpose of treatment.
It is not about assessing more, but about assessing better. About connecting information. About identifying patterns. About understanding what impact each finding has on the child’s participation and everyday life.
In pediatrics, many times the most important thing is not the symptom we see first, but what we are able to discover when we broaden our perspective.
That is why strengthening clinical reasoning and the ability to carry out global assessments not only improves professional practice: it also changes the way we accompany each child and their family.
To accompany this week of reflection on global assessment and clinical reasoning in pediatric physiotherapy, we would like to invite you to participate in the:
“Essential Week of Pediatric Physiotherapy: Clinical Reasoning in Practice”
A free proposal designed both for professionals who already know PIMT and for those who have not yet completed PIMT Essential and wish to begin broadening their clinical perspective in pediatrics.
There will be 4 webinars, 4 concrete tools to use in your clinic the very next day, where we will address clinical cases, functional analysis, and resources applicable to daily practice.
An opportunity to continue developing more integrated, functional clinical reasoning, centered on the child and their participation.

We look forward to seeing you so we can continue deepening together a more human, integrated, and functional pediatric physiotherapy.
