There are children who never stay still. Children who jump, run, spin… all day long.
And still, they don’t regulate. They don’t learn better. They don’t connect more.
Because not all movement builds.
Moving without purpose can be noise. Agitation. Even escape.
But when the body moves with intention, with presence, with rhythm and direction…
Then the vestibular system becomes a bridge.
Between the body and emotion. Between physical balance and internal stability.
Between scattered thought and sustained attention.
A system that is woven over time… and with purpose
The vestibular system, that “organ of balance” hidden in the inner ear, is a sensory network activated with every spin, tilt, and sway.
- It is formed before birth, but its integration is built over years through rich, varied, intentional movement (Božanić Urbančič et al., 2023).
- It is not enough to move a lot. It is necessary to move well. To move with feeling.
Why do some children move constantly… and don’t improve?
Many children with ADHD or sensory difficulties present with motor hyperactivity.
But studies show that without vestibular integration, this movement doesn’t calm, focus, or build.
It only exhausts (MacLean & Baumeister, 1982).
The vestibular system doesn’t just need quantity of movement. It needs quality:
- Movement with orientation.
- With body presence.
- With clear sensory feedback.
When movement guides, the brain responds
- The vestibular system projects onto the thalamus, the limbic system, and the hippocampus: key nuclei for emotion, memory, and attention (Wiener-Vacher et al., 2013).
- In children with and without disorders, directed vestibular stimulation can improve motor planning, emotional regulation, and sustained concentration (Božanić Urbančič et al., 2023).
Cases that inspire
- In a clinical study, children with cerebral palsy who received meaningful vestibular stimuli (rocking, directed spinning, swinging with presence) achieved motor and cognitive progress beyond what was expected for their profile (Nurs Pract Today, 2015).
- Even in babies without alterations, well-guided vestibular stimulation accelerates postural development and improves self-regulation from the first months (Lobo et al., 2014).
So then… what kind of movement do we need?
It’s not about moving more, but moving better.
The vestibular system is not activated by just any kind of movement: it needs that movement to have direction, rhythm, pause, and purpose.
There is a huge difference between a child who jumps nonstop because they can’t calm down, and one who spins on a steady swing, in a safe environment, while feeling their body and regulating their emotion.
Because it’s not the same…
- Moving without pause… as moving with rhythm.
- Spinning out of control… as spinning with orientation and stable gaze.
- Jumping to escape the body… as jumping to explore space.
- Overflowing… as finding an internal axis.
The movement that regulates invites body awareness, contact, shared play, inner balance.
The movement that builds is not automatic, but felt.
It is accompanied, structured, and has a beginning, a development, and a close.
It doesn’t overwhelm: it organizes.
A call to move the body… and the soul
The vestibular system not only supports physical balance.
It also provides the foundation for emotional security, mental presence, and cognitive structure.
Today, more than ever, children need spaces where they can move with purpose,
not as escape… but as construction.
Because when movement is meaningful, the body calms, the brain learns… and the child flourishes.
