And when we bring certain stimuli in too early, we may generate overload or make processes that are still under construction more difficult. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How the baby develops in the first months<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the first weeks, the baby spends a lot of time with the head turned to one side.<br\/>This is not random:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f It helps prevent asphyxia.<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f It promotes safety in the presence of reflux.<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f And, above all, it reflects how the baby\u2019s brain functions at this stage.<br\/><br\/>At the beginning, the cerebral hemispheres are not yet fully integrated. In other words, the right and left sides of the body are not yet working in a coordinated way. <br\/><br\/>Because of this:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f The baby first explores the sides<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f And later begins to integrate the midline (what is directly in front of them)<br\/><br\/>This process takes time\u2026 and it is essential to respect it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Three risks of inappropriate baby gym use<\/h2>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Visual overload<\/strong><br\/><br\/>When we place objects directly in front of the baby, we force them to coordinate both eyes before they are ready.<br\/><br\/>This may generate:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Excessive visual effort.<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Difficulties with ocular coordination.<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f In some cases, it may contribute to ocular deviations.<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Difficulties in hand-eye coordination<\/strong><br\/><br\/>Before 4 months of age, the baby cannot voluntarily reach for objects.<br\/><br\/>And one important point:<br\/>the hands only begin to coordinate at the midline at around 5 months.<br\/><br\/>If we place stimuli directly in front of the baby:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Lateral exploration is skipped<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Coordination that is not yet mature is forced<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f It may affect eye\u2013neck\u2013hand integration<br\/><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Risk of cranial deformities<\/strong><br\/><br\/>Excessive time spent lying on the back may generate alterations in head shape:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Plagiocephaly (lateral flattening)<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Brachycephaly (posterior flattening)<br\/><br\/>Today we know this is becoming increasingly frequent, and prolonged use of the baby gym in this position may contribute to it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So\u2026 should you stop using the baby gym?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">baby gym is not the problem. The problem is how it is used. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 recommendations for using it properly<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2714\ufe0f 1. Use it in the prone position<\/strong><br\/>Place the baby on their tummy (tummy time), with the toys a little farther away.<br\/> <br\/>This supports:<br\/> <br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Head control<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Weight-bearing through the arms<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Intention to move<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2714\ufe0f 2. Stimulate from the sides<\/strong><br\/><br\/>Instead of placing the baby directly under the toys:<br\/><br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Place them slightly to one side<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Allow them to look and orient laterally<br\/>\u25aa\ufe0f Then alternate to the other side<br\/><br\/>This position supports the so-called \u201cfencer posture,\u201d which is fundamental for neurodevelopment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u2714\ufe0f 3.
