(2025) have just published a study that opens up many connections: <strong>&#8220;Assessing dynamic stability in children with idiopathic toe walking during overground walking&#8221;<\/strong> in Clinical Biomechanics.<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Idiopathic toe walking (ITW)<\/strong> remains a clinical challenge. Although it is commonly associated with ankle stiffness, muscle shortening, imbalance, and sensorimotor alterations, this new study proposes looking beyond the joint and observing the body in motion: how does the child organize movement in order not to fall?<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Swiss researchers analyzed 35 children with ITW and compared them to 20 typically developing children using 3D gait analysis. They introduced two key measures to assess dynamic stability:<\/p>&#13;\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li><strong>Margin of Stability (MoS)<\/strong>: measures how close the child&#8217;s center of mass is to moving outside their base of support.<\/li>&#13;\n\n\n&#13;\n<li><strong>Whole-Body Angular Momentum (WBAM)<\/strong>: reflects how much the body rotates during walking.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key findings:<\/h3>&#13;\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">&#13;\n<li><strong>Children with ITW show a significantly shorter anterior margin of stability<\/strong>, indicating a \u201cfalling-forward\u201d strategy.<\/li>&#13;\n\n\n&#13;\n<li><strong>They also exhibit higher angular momentum in the coronal plane<\/strong>, suggesting more side-to-side movements and less postural control.<\/li>&#13;\n\n\n&#13;\n<li><strong>No significant differences were found in walking speed<\/strong> or conventional spatiotemporal parameters.<\/li>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does this mean clinically?<\/h3>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems that children with ITW don\u2019t just walk \u201cweird\u201d because of an orthopedic issue. Their pattern appears to be an adaptation to maintain forward movement, likely because they haven\u2019t yet developed mature central control of gait.<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pattern resembles that of very young children: stiff trunk, less rotation, short steps, and greater reliance on primitive strategies.<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, we are seeing neurosensorimotor and neurodevelopmental aspects in these children.<\/p>&#13;\n&#13;\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What can we associate this with?<\/h3>&#13;\n&#13;\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very interesting clinical aspect of children with toe walking is the alteration of the plantar grasp circuit.
